Weekly devotion: How can we draw close to the brokenhearted?

Refuge Egypt, Cairo

Highly skilled doctors and medical professionals at Refuge Egypt provide culturally responsive medical treatment to the most vulnerable refugees.

Embrace partner Refuge Egypt is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Egypt that provides holistic support to refugees and asylum seekers fleeing war, disaster and persecution.

Among its many services, Refuge Egypt runs several clinics in Cairo, offering accessible and culturally sensitive healthcare. From antenatal and well-baby check-ups to treatment for malnutrition, TB, HIV and chronic illnesses, their medical teams provide care to those often excluded from Egypt’s overburdened public health system. They also offer psychosocial support and help with navigating complex bureaucratic systems. In times when refugees struggle to access the healthcare they need, Refuge Egypt steps in to provide healing, dignity and hope.

Bible reading

‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’

Psalm 34:18

Thought

Psalm 34:18 speaks directly to the experience of many refugees in Egypt today - brokenhearted, displaced and at times crushed in spirit. These are not abstract feelings, but daily realities for those who have fled conflict in Sudan or elsewhere, and who now struggle to access even the most basic healthcare due to language barriers or racism.

Refuge Egypt becomes a lifeline in such moments. Through attentive listening, practical medical care, and sustained compassion, they make visible the nearness of God. Their clinics are sacred spaces where healing begins - not just in bodies, but in souls too.

Ask yourself: In what ways can I draw close to those who feel crushed or forgotten today?

Prayer

God of compassion,

We thank you that you are close to the brokenhearted and that your healing presence brings comfort to those in pain. We lift up the work of Refuge Egypt: bless their clinics, their teams, and every person who seeks their help.

We pray for refugees in Cairo and beyond who struggle to access the care they need. May they know your nearness. May barriers be broken down. And may healing—physical and emotional—flow through your people.

Help us to see the suffering others carry and respond with kindness, courage and love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
