Weekly devotion: Pray for trainee nurses in Egypt

Harpur Nursing School

In Egypt, there is a lack of good-quality nurse training available. In response, our partner – the Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf – started its own nursing school in 2017. Its one-of-a-kind programme in the Nile Delta region provides trainee nurses with a comprehensive two-year training programme that blends clinical, laboratory and classroom instruction.

The programme trains nurses to understand the importance of holistic care and to see their role as important to the patient’s success. Egyptian doctors are often overworked and see many patients each day, leaving them with little time to talk to patients and educate them on the prevention and holistic treatment of disease. The trainee nurses are encouraged from day one to include the patient in their own healthcare and to empower them with the knowledge they need to manage their conditions and change their lives.

A new intake of nursing students is now beginning the two-year training programme. Please pray for the students and for the school’s mission to improve patient care across the region.

Bible reading

‘Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.’

Hebrews 13: 20-21

Thought

It is an amazing thought that the God we serve equips us with everything we need to do his will. Sometimes it is easy to fall into the trap of relying on ourselves and our own resources. But as these verses remind us, we have direct access to the Triune God of the universe who has power even over death. We can come before him in our weakness and be confident that he will fill us with his strength. As we pray for the trainee nurses at Harpur Memorial Hospital, let us ask God to equip them with everything they need to embark on their studies.

Ask yourself: Take time to read through these Bible verses from Hebrews slowly. Reflect on what God has done for you in past, and what he promises to do for you in the future. What encouragement can you draw from these verses?

Prayer

Gracious God,

We lift before you the work of Harpur Nursing School. We are humbled and inspired by the big vision they have to train up nurses and improve patient care in Egypt.

You know each and every one of the new trainee nurses by name. May you pour out your blessing upon them as they embark on this new learning journey. Help them to work hard for your glory, and to find meaning, joy and satisfaction in their work.

We pray for all the patients the nurses will be caring for – may they recover well and regain their strength, and know that they are loved and valued.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
