Weekly devotion: Compassion in the Clinic

Healthcare for chronic conditions is vitally important, even when people face more urgent pressures. This week we pray for the staff and patients of the Tahaddi Health Centre in Hay el Gharbeh, Lebanon.

In the Beirut area of Hay El Gharbeh, the Tahaddi Health Centre offers primary care for a disadvantaged population made up of refugees, migrant workers and Lebanese families facing extreme hardship.

Embrace supports Tahaddi’s programmes in education, health and social work, and this week we are focusing our prayers on the medical clinic that offers a lifeline for people with chronic illness, especially diabetes.

Under Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis and the threat of war, many people living with diabetes struggle to afford medication or regular tests and consultations. Understandably, managing a chronic illness becomes secondary to the daily pressures of finding food and work; as a result, serious complications can go untreated.

Tahaddi’s Diabetes Clinic helps patients take control of their health through blood sugar monitoring, medication, and practical dietary advice. Just as importantly, staff take time to listen to patients, helping them feel less isolated. Through compassionate care, Tahaddi is not only improving physical health but also helping people feel a sense of belonging in Hay el Gharbeh, where it is easy to be anonymous and unheard.

Bible reading

Happy are those who consider the poor;
the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.
The Lord protects them and keeps them alive;
they are called happy in the land.
You do not give them up to the will of their enemies.
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed;
in their illness you heal all their infirmities.

Psalm 41:1-3

Thought

Chronic illness can be a lonely experience, especially when everyday survival is already a struggle. Psalm 41 creates an image of God protecting those, like the staff at Tahaddi, who care for the most vulnerable members of society. The confidential practical help they provide shows that even in a fragmented community like Hay el Gharbeh, compassionate action can help people feel both physically better and less isolated.

Just as health conditions can be long-lasting and not always noticeable to others, compassion doesn’t have to draw attention – perhaps we, too, can quietly and faithfully support someone who needs our help.

Ask yourself: How could you show God’s love in a practical way this week to someone privately dealing with illness, stress or loneliness?

Prayer

Lord God,

Thank you for the work of the Tahaddi Health Centre in supporting those facing illness and hardship. We pray especially for patients managing diabetes and other long-term conditions. Bring them the peace of mind that there is always somewhere to turn for help.

Bless the doctors, nurses, social workers, and all the staff who serve the people of Hay el Gharbeh. Sustain them in their work and let your love be seen through their care.

Help us to notice those around us who are struggling alone. Keep us ready to listen to others and walk alongside them in their time of need.

Amen.
