Weekly devotion: Called to serve, not to be served

Palestinian Bible Society, Jericho

Elias, Project Leader at the Palestinian Bible Society

As the number of indigenous Christians in Palestine declines sharply, there is an urgent need to invest in the next generation and develop positive, effective Christian leaders. Our partner, the Palestinian Bible Society, is running leadership training for young Christians across the West Bank to develop their leadership skills.

The training focuses on helping young Christians to develop a biblical worldview and follow the example of Christ’s leadership. Through this, the youth are being equipped to be active leaders in their communities.

Bible reading

‘But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Mark 10:43-45

Thought

Christ’s leadership is markedly different to worldly leadership. Focused on others rather than self, it is selfless not self-seeking, gentle not domineering, and humble not pride-filled. Christ’s servant-hearted leadership, so beautifully sketched out in these verses, is what any Christians in leadership roles are called to emulate. Please pray that the Palestinian youth being trained up in this project will be captivated by this vision and that they will be a blessing to their communities.

Ask yourself: What might it look like in your context to be a ‘slave of all’?

Prayer

Loving God,

We commit the Palestinian Bible Society’s leadership training to you. May it equip these young people to have the same mind as Christ Jesus, and may they in turn be a blessing to their peers, their families and their wider communities.

Give us a desire to serve you, and help us to do so wholeheartedly.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
