Lebanon’s Displaced Families:Tarek’s Story
When airstrikes began to hit Lebanon, young Tarek and his mum, who was just days from giving birth to her second son, had to escape quickly from their home.
They have taken refuge in a garage with another family and are receiving help from Embrace partner MERATH (Middle East Revive and Thrive). Tarek described his experience:
““We heard boom, boom, boom, boom! My legs started shaking and I was thinking, ‘what is this?’ We closed the door of our home and we fled. Now I am scared they will bomb this building next to us.””
Tarek has been through a terrifying ordeal but is still thinking of others and looking forward to welcoming his new brother. When the team asked what they could bring to help him, he answered:
‘I would like nappies for my baby brother. For me, water.
I don’t have a ball here and when it is summer I would like to eat ice cream.’
At the moment it is much too cold for ice cream, but MERATH have brought nappies, milk, water, mattresses, blankets, and underwear for the families staying in the garages. Most importantly, they even found a ball for Tarek – a simple gift that brought a big smile amid such uncertain times.
