Stories from the war in Gaza: A mother reunited with her infant son
AISHA’S STORY
The humanitarian situation is Gaza is still critical, but we give thanks that the fragile ceasefire is enabling moments of joy. Our partner Caritas Jerusalem witnessed one such moment when they were distributing baby formula at Al-Aqsa Hospital. They told us:
“A couple walked into the maternity ward, searching anxiously from crib to crib. When the doctors pointed to their baby, Aisha approached slowly — and the moment she saw him, she collapsed into an emotional embrace.”
Aisha had been badly injured in an Israeli airstrike shortly after giving birth. Rushed to hospital, she was separated from her new-born son. When she’d finally recovered enough from her injuries to leave intensive care, she immediately began her desperate search to try to find out what had happened to him. For months she feared he’d been killed. Unbeknownst to her, he had also taken to a hospital for care. Today she’d finally found him.
Aisha still carries scars from her injuries. Caritas’ team was able to help with treatment, along with warm blankets, baby formula and the promise that, whatever she needed, she could go to their medical points for help. Caritas told us:
“We reassured her that whatever she needed, Caritas Jerusalem would remain by her side. Aisha left feeling safe, supported, and deeply relieved… Her story is a reminder that in the midst of war, loss, and displacement — hope still breaks through. And that day, a mother was reunited with her child in an extraordinary moment of grace, humanity, and presence.”
