Stories from the war in Gaza: Growing up with a physical disability in a warzone

ESMA’S STORY

The Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre, a longstanding partner of Embrace, operates a satellite unit in Gaza that provides vital support for children with disabilities and acute injuries.

Unsurprisingly, there are huge challenges when it comes to offering rehabilitation services to children in Gaza. Dr Saeed, the doctor at the satellite unit, explains why:

"We receive many cases where to offer Comprehensive Rehabilitation is extremely challenging. This is mainly due to a number of factors, such as the nature of the injuries, including amputations, for which there is no facility in Gaza to provide prosthetic devices. We also encounter cases of severe burns that come with significant complications due to the unavailability of basic necessities like moisturising medical creams or specialised silicone dressings. Additionally, some cases arrive without proper diagnosis because advanced diagnostic tests are unavailable for children in Gaza."

Yet in spite of the lack of diagnostic tests and medical supplies, many children in Gaza have benefited greatly from the satellite unit. Esma is one of those children.

Esma has faced many difficulties in her short life due to a suspected metabolic disorder that has impeded her motor development. Medical examinations by staff at the unit have revealed spinal deformities, making movement even more difficult for her – but there have been no opportunities for her to have the scans and diagnostic tests she needs for a clear diagnosis.

Despite this, the staff at the unit have treated Esma’s symptoms – and she has made remarkable progress. A combination of dedicated therapy and perseverance mean that she is now able to stand up without assistance – a milestone that once seemed out of reach.
