Funding vital hospital care in Syria
BELAL’S STORY
When his constant fatigue and shortness of breath resulted in Belal losing his job, he felt he had no choice but to consult a doctor. It was then that he learnt he had a serious heart condition and needed open-heart surgery. The news was doubly devastating – not only was he seriously ill but he had no way of paying for any treatment (unlike in the UK, hospital treatment is not available free of charge in Syria). But without surgery he was unlikely to survive.
“I entered a state of depression and fear for my family, especially when I have a young son in high school and he needs great support for his education and future.”
Thankfully Belal was able to find help through the St Vincent de Paul Society, which subsidises medical expenses through a project that Embrace helps fund.
“They checked my medical condition and assured me that they would support me and cover my surgery cost, which gave me hope.”
Having undergone successful surgery, Belal is now optimistic about the future:
“I have overcome depression and hopelessness. I made my comeback to my normal live with joy among my family! Now I hope to gradually return to work to give them a better life and a decent living. I will continue to thank God, the St Vincent de Paul Society, and the benefactors, who provided the medical support I needed and are always helping the suffering patients and those who are in need.”
