On 15 December, Embrace the Middle East joined with other Christian organisations and church leaders to issue a joint statement on the Middle East crisis and reiterate the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire.

This week, whilst the temporary truce was still holding, Embrace the Middle East joined church and Christian civil society leaders in the UK, the US, Ireland, the global south and elsewhere in reiterating calls for a permanent ceasefire with the release of all hostages and criticising inaction and prevarication by parts of the international community.

Embrace the Middle East’s CEO, Tim Livesey, alongside over 20 church leaders and Christian organisations, has joined the call for a ceasefire and all governments with influence to bring an immediate end to the violence in Israel and Gaza.

Embrace the Middle East is among over 300 charities who have signed the #CeasefireNow petition, an open call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and further loss of innocent lives.

The death and destruction caused by the missile which struck the Ahli hospital last night has shocked the world.  As a long-standing partner of Al Ahli we are deeply distressed at the loss of life. 

Israel has the right to respond to the barbarous events of the weekend. It does not have the right - on this international law is very clear - to act indiscriminately, without due regard for the safety of innocent civilians.

As unprecedented and disturbing events continue to unfold in Israel and Palestine, we pray for peace and we want to convince our politicians that a lasting peace will never be secured without a commitment to the right of all in the region to democratically determine their own future, and to see justice based on mutual respect and equal rights for all.

According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with disability. Many of those people live in the Middle East.
