Supporting residential disability care in the West Bank

18-year-old Amjad has motor developmental delay, meaning he has trouble controlling the movements in his body and his muscles are weak. He was admitted to the Children’s Department at the Four Homes of Mercy (a residential home in the West Bank that Embrace supports) back in 2011, where they worked hard to help Amjad develop his muscle strength and improve his balance and provided him with a specially adapted wheelchair.

During the Covid pandemic Amjad returned home and his physiotherapy sessions had to stop for 9 months. Sadly, during that time Amjad’s physical abilities declined. When he returned to the centre a specialist, intensive treatment plan was developed for him, including 2-3 physical therapy sessions per week to so he could recover his muscular strength, improve balance, sitting position and improve his muscular endurance.

Amjad can now stand up with the aid of a support frame and the staff at the centre are hopeful he will soon be able to move around using it.
